3 Backhand Shots

HOW & WHEN

In our most recent post we briefly discussed the importance of remaining neutral on your skate blades when tight-turning if you have the puck on your stick, so please continue to practice that edge work drill for better tight-turning.

Over the long term, you’ll want to build the best skating foundation you can because skating skills intermesh with upper body mechanics for proper puck handling, passing, and shooting (which will become quite complex over time).

Today’s video post with Coach Sean McLaughlin of Elite Hockey Science Reston highlights different basic offensive zone attack options for your backhanders that you should be training often. Not only should you perform them frequently, but you should realize that these types of shot attempts become commonplace at higher levels of play. They aren’t necessarily all backhanders on goal at the college/professional level, but backhanders are a great example of hockey shots that you’re forced to attempt from a compromised body position due to intense pressure from opponents.
