The Elite Hockey Science Shooting Curriculum

In this video Coach Sean McLaughlin has a good conversation with one of the newest coaches at Elite Hockey Science Reston. Together, they summarize what new instructors should expect and prepare for during the instructor certification process, which eventually leads into teaching their own lessons when they’re ready. Inherently, this video will help YOU better understand the method to our madness.

One signifiant challenge we face at EHSR (particularly in our SkateQuest Arena shooting room) is terminology. For example, with something as simple as describing a wrist shot, many new players that take lessons refer to the rotation of the blade as a twist of the wrist, as opposed to a turn. While this may seem insignificant to many people, to a certified EHSR instructor a twist refers to an entirely different skill in the curriculum. It also implies rotation of the top wrist, which any experienced EHSR shooter/student knows is improper form for a wrist shot.

Getting new coaches to pay close attention to the specificity of the language used presents a challenge during the instructor certification process, but it’s crucial in getting shooters and instructors on the same page. Knowing how, when, and where a player should move through the curriculum makes all the difference in player skill development.
